Labor Day is around the corner, and that means that Fall will be arriving shortly. After a summer filled with sun and extreme temperatures, your skin will be asking for a change. Just like your wardrobe, it is important to swap some key pieces of your skincare regimen when transitioning from season to season. To transition your skincare to fall, I recommend focusing on pigmentation and dryness.
Address pigmentation
Pigmentation can be tackled in a variety of ways. The easiest way can be by adding a Vitamin C and E packed serum to your routine. These antioxidants help brighten a dull complexion. It is best to incorporate these types of serums into your morning routine. Dr. Rogal’s picks: Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, SkinMedica C + E Complex
Incorporate a retinol to encourage surface skin cell turnover. Retinols decrease collagen breakdown and increase collagen synthesis, to help reduce fine lines. Start with a mild retinol at night, as some retinols can be drying on the skin. Dr. Rogal’s picks: Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil, SkinMedica Retinol Complex 0.25
If you struggle with melasma (brown spots), you may benefit from a lightening serum. Lytera 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum is a plant based (no hydroquinone) lightening serum that not only lightens, but combats inflammation, which can trigger melasma.
Certain facial laser treatments, like a photofacial using IPL (intense-pulsed light), are excellent at reducing pigmentation such as brown spots and redness. This procedure is performed in a series over 4-6 sessions and offers dramatic results.
Choose a hydrating moisturizer
Once the humidity drops in the cooler months, your skin will feel the loss of moisture. Make sure you are using a hydrating moisturizer, morning and evening. It doesn’t need to be very rich during the Fall, but something more moisturizing than during the summer will help counteract the drop in moisture in the air. Dr. Rogal’s picks: SkinMedica Replenish Hydrating Cream, Naturopathica Calendula Essential Hydrating Cream, Mustela Stelatopia Emollient Cream
Don’t forget the SPF
Just because you’re not at the beach, doesn’t mean you can ditch the SPF. Broad spectrum SPF should be worn every day to prevent further sun damage. Here are some of my favorite sunscreens that I’ve discussed before.
